There is something very special about making fresh bread, and then sharing it at the dinner table. It's actually very easy and cost effective too, just have some yeast and flour stored in your cupboards to whip this up on demand.
Ingredients
2 cups plain flour
3/4 cup milk and water, ½ milk & ½ water
2 tbsp butter
1 tsp salt
2 tsp sugar
1 x 7g sachet dried instant yeast
Instructions
Melt the butter in a small pan, add the milk and water and warm until body temperature
Add the instant yeast and sugar and give it a little stir together
Leave in a warm place for 5 minutes or until the yeast has turned frothy
Add the flour to a large bowl, make a well in the center
Sprinkle in the salt and pour the yeast mixture in the middle
Stir everything together until it starts to form a ball of dough
Then you can get your hands in to bring it all together
Knead the dough for 8 –10 minutes until it is smooth, elastic and stretchy
Divide into 8 pieces and roll each piece into a ball
Pop all the balls in a baking tray almost next to each other, leaving a little gap in between so they can grow
Place a damp tea cloth over the top of them and place in a warm area for 45 minutes or until doubled in size
Once the balls have risen, pre-heat your oven to 200 c / 390f
Pop inside for 15 minutes or until golden on top and cooked all the way through
I like to brush mine with extra butter as soon as they get out of the oven
Serve straight up, warm in the middle of the table
Notes
Some ovens have a bread proofing function which is great, but if you don’t have that simply warm your oven up, turn it off and place the tray inside with the door slightly ajar so it’s not too hot.
