Croque Monsieur for a Fathers Day Treat

Treat your Dad to a home made brunch or breakfast heart shaped croque monsieur, perfect for Fathers Day. He'll probably cry with happiness from the mix of melted cheese, ham and a mustard white sauce grilled to perfection.

Ingredients

  • White sauce:

  • 1 tbsp butter

  • 1 tbsp flour

  • ½ cup milk

  • 1 tsp mustard

 

  • Croque Monsieur ingredients:

  • 6 slices white bread

  • butter to spread on bread

  • 3 slices of ham

  • ½ cup grated gruyere cheese (gruyere is the traditional cheese but you can use whatever cheese you like)

 

  • Equipment:

  • Heart shaped cutter

  • Frying pan

  • Small sauce pan

Instructions

  1. Start by making your white sauce

  2. On a low heat add the butter, once melted stir in the flour, then slowly add the milk

  3. stirring quickly all the time so all the milk is incorporated before you add the next bit

  4. Keep going until all milk is used up

  5. Add the mustard and stir in

  6. Leave to one side

  7. Butter each slice of bread,

  8. If it's a special occasion you can cut a big heart shape out of each slice

  9. On the non buttered side add a sprinkle of cheese and ham and pop another piece of bread on top, like a sandwich

  10. Place into a warm frying pan, buttered side’s on the out side

  11. Brown both sides

  12. Spread a spoonful of the white sauce on top of each heart croque monsieur

  13. and another sprinkle of cheese and place under a hot grill until the cheese starts to brown

  14. Serve straight up with a sprinkle of chives or even poached eggs on the side if you wanted to make this more like a breakfast dish.
