Treat your Dad to a home made brunch or breakfast heart shaped croque monsieur, perfect for Fathers Day. He'll probably cry with happiness from the mix of melted cheese, ham and a mustard white sauce grilled to perfection.
Ingredients
White sauce:
1 tbsp butter
1 tbsp flour
½ cup milk
1 tsp mustard
Croque Monsieur ingredients:
6 slices white bread
butter to spread on bread
3 slices of ham
½ cup grated gruyere cheese (gruyere is the traditional cheese but you can use whatever cheese you like)
Equipment:
Heart shaped cutter
Frying pan
Small sauce pan
Instructions
Start by making your white sauce
On a low heat add the butter, once melted stir in the flour, then slowly add the milk
stirring quickly all the time so all the milk is incorporated before you add the next bit
Keep going until all milk is used up
Add the mustard and stir in
Leave to one side
Butter each slice of bread,
If it's a special occasion you can cut a big heart shape out of each slice
On the non buttered side add a sprinkle of cheese and ham and pop another piece of bread on top, like a sandwich
Place into a warm frying pan, buttered side’s on the out side
Brown both sides
Spread a spoonful of the white sauce on top of each heart croque monsieur
and another sprinkle of cheese and place under a hot grill until the cheese starts to brown
Serve straight up with a sprinkle of chives or even poached eggs on the side if you wanted to make this more like a breakfast dish.
