Learn how to make a firm favourite dessert - Apple Crumble, who could resist this on a cold winters evening. This is real comfort food!
Ingredients
Filling:
1.5 kg/ 5 or 6 large cooking apples peeled and chopped into cubes
100g golden caster sugar
1 cinnamon stick or 1 tsp ground cinnamon
6-floz water
Crumble Topping:
300g plain flour
200g unsalted butter cold cut into cubes
175g golden caster sugar (or can use brown sugar)
½ cup oats
½ tsp nutmeg
2 tbsp custard powder
Instructions
Preheat oven to 180 c / gas 4
Put the apples into a saucepan with the sugar and water and heat gently
Simmer for 5 – 8 minutes, with the lid half on, until the apple is soft
Pour the apple mixture into a baking dish
The apple mixture should fill about half of the dish - If you put too much apple in it will ooze out when you cook it
Make the crumble topping
Add the flour to a large roomy bowl, and rub the butter in with your fingertips to make fine breadcrumbs
Then add the nutmeg, sugar, oats and custard powder and mix together
Sprinkle crumble topping over the cooked apples and make sure the whole dish is covered
Pop into the oven for 30 – 40 mins until the top is golden serve with a big dollop of custard
Notes
Apples contain pectin – a soluble fibre that helps cleanse the intestines. They help keep your cholesterol down and also to maintain blood sugar levels. Apples are easily digestible and contain lots of water to keep you well hydrated. Apples keep you energised, so one a day should give you an extra energy boost for all the loving your doing!
